La Plagne is reducing its fireworks programme by a third following the collection of more than 1,000 pieces of fireworks-related waste in the French Alps resort.
A total of 1,053 items of waste from fireworks displays were collected in a rubbish collection at the end of winter in spring 2026, highlighting the environmental impact of pyrotechnic shows throughout the season.

Number of firework displays cut by one-third
In response, La Plagne has decided to cut the number of fireworks displays scheduled throughout the year by one third.
The move forms part of the resort’s commitment to the Mountain Zero Wild Waste by 2030 charter, launched by environmental organisation Mountain Riders, which is supporting La Plagne in its efforts to reduce litter and protect the natural environment.
Fireworks debris is among the most frequently collected types of waste during the off-season, when melting snow and the end of the winter season reveal rubbish left behind on the mountains.
To tackle the problem, a working group has been established involving local residents, tourism businesses, fireworks specialists, the tourist office, local authorities and municipal police.
The aim is to create a practical guide for local authorities and other mountain destinations, helping them manage fireworks displays and the associated waste more effectively.
La Plagne is also taking steps to reduce plastic waste and encourage visitors to use refillable water bottles. Eleven water fountains have been installed at tourist office reception areas, supplementing three already available across the ski area.
